Libertarian Party Exposes Financial Mismanagement in Baugo Township: Taxpayers Bear the Cost
Elkhart, Indiana – February 3, 2025

The Libertarian Party of Indiana’s 2nd District, led by the Libertarian Party of Elkhart County, has uncovered serious financial misconduct in Baugo Township under Trustee Katherine Weaver. After 18 years in office, Weaver now faces potential felony charges for financial mismanagement and misuse of taxpayer funds.

Investigation Uncovers Troubling Irregularities

Libertarian Party member Mellissa Kauffman-Miller began reviewing Baugo Township’s financial records. Her investigation quickly found multiple irregularities. This led to the filing of an affidavit on January 14, 2025. The affidavit was later withdrawn for a more thorough review, but the evidence already indicates widespread financial negligence.

A court petition has been filed to remove Weaver from office. A recent state audit also revealed over $417,925 in excess spending over the past five years. This has disrupted the township’s budget and diverted critical funds from essential services. (ABC57)

Direct Impact on Baugo Township Residents

Weaver’s actions have directly harmed township residents in several ways:

  • Underfunded Services: Funds have been misallocated, leaving essential services like infrastructure, emergency response, and community programs underfunded.
  • Higher Taxes: The township’s fiscal mismanagement could lead to increased taxes or cuts to vital services to cover the shortfall.
  • Lost Trust: The lack of accountability has eroded public trust. Residents feel their tax dollars have been misused.

Key Allegations Against Katherine Weaver

The investigation has uncovered several key allegations:

  • Missing Funds: Around $250,000 is unaccounted for due to missing receipts and unexplained withdrawals. This raises concerns about potential theft and fraud.
  • Improper Record-Keeping: The township’s financial records are incomplete and contain discrepancies. This violates state requirements for transparency and accountability.
  • Unauthorized Spending: Township funds were used for unauthorized purposes, without oversight, which may constitute official misconduct.
  • Erosion of Trust: Financial mismanagement has damaged public trust, affecting services that depend on responsible governance.
